Panthers’ Zito Eyes Bobrovsky Re-sign amid Off-season Change Uncertainty

The Florida Panthers face an uncertain off-season after their early exit from the playoffs. Following three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup finals, the team’s management is reflecting on the challenges they faced this past season. General manager Bill Zito cites fatigue and bad luck as primary factors affecting team performance.

Pandemic of Injuries Affected the Panthers

The Panthers struggled significantly with injuries throughout the season. Captain Aleksander Barkov was sidelined after tearing his ACL and MCL during training camp. In addition, prominent players like Matthew Tkachuk, Brad Marchand, and Seth Jones also missed considerable time due to injuries.

Core Roster Stability

  • Most core players are under contract for the next season.
  • Star goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is a notable exception, as he will enter unrestricted free agency.

Bobrovsky’s current contract, valued at seven years and $70 million, is set to expire on July 1. This season, he recorded a 27-22-1 record, with a .878 save percentage and a 3.05 goals-against average, marking his lowest save percentage since joining the NHL.

Future Prospects and Challenges

Zito remains optimistic about the possibility of retaining Bobrovsky, saying, “I’d like to keep him. I hope we can.” However, he acknowledges the complexities of making roster decisions, especially with limited trade options available in the off-season.

Florida currently has $15.5 million in cap space and has filled 18 out of 23 roster spots for the upcoming season. They were recently eliminated from playoff contention, resulting in one of the lower records in the NHL.

Draft Lottery Implications

Looking ahead, the Panthers could benefit from the draft lottery. If they secure a top-10 pick, they can retain their first-round draft choice instead of sending it to Chicago, as part of a previous trade that involved acquiring Seth Jones.

Zito noted that this could help leverage the disappointment of the season into a strategic advantage for the future, stating, “It would give us the benefit of reaping the benefit of this unfortunate year.”

The Panthers’ next match will be against the Montreal Canadiens as they attempt to finish the remaining games of their season strongly.
