Edmonton Man Charged with Odometer Fraud in Vehicle Resale Scheme

Edmonton police have recently charged a 39-year-old man in connection with a vehicle resale scheme involving odometer fraud. The accused, identified as Harmandeep Singh Bindra, is facing charges for fraud and uttering a forged document following an investigation by the Edmonton Police Service.
Details of the Odometer Fraud Scheme
Authorities allege that Bindra engaged in fraudulent activities by purchasing high-mileage vehicles through Facebook Marketplace starting in March 2025. He reportedly modified the odometer readings, reducing recorded mileage by hundreds of thousands of kilometers. After making these alterations, he sold the vehicles at significantly inflated prices, using a fictitious Facebook account.
False Documentation Provided
To further deceive potential buyers, Bindra allegedly supplied counterfeit CARFAX reports. These documents are intended to validate the claimed vehicle mileage and service history, but in this case, were fabricated.
Community Awareness and Precautions
Constable Amelia Towns from the Edmonton Police Service highlighted the importance of thorough research before making significant purchases like a vehicle. She emphasized that investing in a legitimate CARFAX report can provide potential buyers with service history and accident details, potentially preventing them from falling victim to scams.
Investigation Update
The Edmonton police received a tip-off on March 13 and have since identified two complainants connected to this case. However, investigators believe that additional victims may exist. Bindra has been known to operate under various aliases, including Hary Smith, Harry Singh, and Gurdev. The types of vehicles primarily linked to Bindra include:
- Nissan Altimas
- Honda Accords
- Honda CRVs
As the case progresses, it is essential to note that the allegations against Bindra are yet to be tested in court. The investigation by the Edmonton Police Service continues as they seek to gather more information and support from possible victims.
