Head Coach Carla MacLeod Steps Back for Cancer Treatment Focus

In a significant development for the Ottawa Charge, head coach Carla MacLeod is stepping back to focus on cancer treatments. The Premier Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) club announced this decision on Monday, emphasizing the need for MacLeod to prioritize her health.
Carla MacLeod’s Health Journey
Carla MacLeod, who disclosed her breast cancer diagnosis in November, will be away for an unspecified time to continue her treatment. The team has expressed unwavering support for her and her family during this challenging period.
Immediate Coaching Changes
- Assistant coach Haley Irwin will assume head coaching duties in MacLeod’s absence.
- Irwin has been part of the coaching staff since the team’s inception in the 2023-24 season.
- She temporarily filled the head coach role on December 2 when MacLeod began treatment.
The organization has made it clear that it respects MacLeod’s privacy and wishes for her to focus on recovery. General manager Mike Hirshfeld stated, “We want her to focus first and foremost on the treatment and getting better.” He encouraged her to spend quality time with her family and take all the time she needs.
Ottawa Charge Performance This Season
Under MacLeod’s leadership, the Ottawa Charge have shown promise. Last season, they reached the Walter Cup finals, ultimately falling to the Minnesota Frost. This year, the team currently ranks fifth in the league standings with 33 points from 25 games. They are just one point behind the Toronto Sceptres, who occupy the final playoff position with five games remaining on the schedule.
As the team navigates this transition, the focus remains on supporting MacLeod and ensuring her return to health as she has been a crucial figure for the Ottawa Charge since their inaugural season.
