Calgarian Urges Organ Donation Awareness Ahead of Green Shirt Day

As Green Shirt Day approaches, Calgarians are encouraged to participate in a two-kilometre walk aimed at enhancing awareness about organ and tissue donation. Scheduled to take place on April 7, the event serves as a reminder of the critical need for organ donors in the community.

Scott Clay’s Journey

Calgary resident Scott Clay has been waiting for a kidney transplant since 2024. His ordeal began after a severe motorcycle accident in 2020 led to the discovery of stage 4 kidney disease. Scott’s wife, Wendy, and daughter, Nicole, have joined him in advocating for organ donation awareness.

Despite the challenges, Wendy noted that Scott maintains a positive outlook. “There’s ups and downs, but if you were to talk to him, you’d never know there were any issues,” she remarked.

Medical Complications

Scott’s health complications did not end with kidney disease. He was diagnosed with cancer, complicating his transplant eligibility. “I found out that I had cancer, so I had to deal with that. I’m now cancer-free, but you must be cancer-free for two years before they’ll even consider doing a transplant,” Scott explained. He is currently in this mandatory waiting period.

The Significance of Green Shirt Day

Green Shirt Day is commemorated annually to honor the lives lost in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018. It highlights the legacy of Logan Boulet, a team member who became an organ donor, ultimately saving six lives. His act of generosity inspires many families, including the Clays, to advocate for organ donation.

Community Support

Families affected by organ donation have found a sense of community through this initiative. Wendy expressed her emotions at seeing supporters wearing green shirts, stating, “All these people in green shirts were there for hope and motion, and I just started to cry, because I felt, here’s our other family. Here’s people like us.”

Statistics Highlighting the Need for Organ Donation

Jill Goth from the Kidney Foundation of Canada emphasized the critical need for transplants in the nation. She reported that around 4,000 people are currently on waiting lists for life-saving transplants, with 72% of them awaiting a kidney. Tragically, many will not survive without these transplants.

Call to Action

The Clays urge individuals to consider becoming organ donors. Even if a person has not signed up for an official registry, it is crucial to communicate their intentions to family members. This simple act can significantly impact the lives of those in need.
