Michigan Triumphs Over UConn, Secures Second NCAA Men’s Basketball Title

The Michigan Wolverines have clinched their second NCAA men’s basketball championship with a 69-63 triumph over the UConn Huskies. This victory marks a significant achievement for the program, as their first title was secured back in 1989. During that championship, Michigan triumphed over the Seton Hall Pirates in a thrilling overtime match.
Key Players in the Championship Game
Elliot Cadeau emerged as the standout player in this championship game, contributing 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Other notable performances included:
- Morez Johnson Jr.: 12 points and 10 rebounds
- Yaxel Lendeborg: 13 points
Michigan’s Journey to the Championship
This title showcases a remarkable turnaround for Michigan’s basketball program. In 2024, the Wolverines struggled, finishing the season with a disappointing 8-24 record. The coaching transition came with the hiring of Dusty May, who took over from Juwan Howard.
Under May’s leadership, Michigan rebounded in 2025, ending the season with a 27-10 record and earning a spot in the NCAA March Madness tournament. However, they faced a setback, losing to the No. 1 seed Auburn in the Sweet 16, marking their first tournament appearance since 2022.
Reaching New Heights
In Dusty May’s second season, the Wolverines significantly improved, posting an impressive 36-3 record. They not only played in the Big Ten title game but also earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
This championship victory not only cements Michigan’s status in NCAA history but also signifies a bright future for the program under the guidance of Coach May.
