Wembanyama Leaves Spurs Game Against 76ers Due to Rib Injury

Victor Wembanyama, the standout player for the San Antonio Spurs, exited Monday’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a rib injury. The Spurs officially ruled him out for the game’s second half after he sustained a left rib contusion during the second quarter.

Injury Details

Wembanyama collided with 76ers forward Paul George while receiving a pass as the Spurs advanced the ball. The incident occurred with 10:47 remaining in the second quarter. Following the collision, Wembanyama was substituted out and went to the locker room.

He briefly returned to the bench but requested to leave again with just 44.3 seconds left in the half, and he did not reappear after halftime. The team confirmed shortly after that he wouldn’t continue in the game.

Game Performance

During his limited time on the court, Wembanyama played 15 minutes and 40 seconds. He recorded 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. This performance will count towards his eligibility for the postseason awards, as players only need to play a minimum of 15 minutes under specific exceptions.

Postseason Implications

The third-year player is a frontrunner for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year and is also in contention for the MVP award. To remain eligible for postseason accolades, Wembanyama must play at least 20 minutes in one of San Antonio’s final three games.

  • Wembanyama’s scoring average: 24.9 points per game
  • Rebounding average: 11.6 rebounds per game
  • Block average: 3.1 blocks per game

Before the injury, Wembanyama had been on a hot streak, scoring 30 points or more in three consecutive games, along with at least 15 rebounds and 3 blocks. This achievement tied him for the second-longest streak since blocks began being recorded in the 1973-74 season, only behind a four-game stretch by Shaquille O’Neal in 1999.

What’s Next?

The Spurs will closely monitor Wembanyama’s recovery as they prepare for the remaining games of the season. His health will be critical for both the team’s performance and his individual award candidacy.
