Saskatoon’s University Bridge Closed to Non-Emergency Vehicles Starting Monday

Saskatoon’s University Bridge will be closed to almost all non-emergency vehicles starting Monday at 7 a.m. The closure will also affect College Drive between Clarence Avenue and Hospital Drive. This construction work is expected to last between eight to ten weeks.
Recognized Exceptions for Emergency Services
Emergency vehicles, including police, fire, and ambulances, will retain access to the bridge. Special vehicles from the Saskatchewan Health Authority will also be permitted to use the structure during the closure.
Reason for the Construction
Jay Magus, director of transportation for the city, emphasized the necessity of these projects for infrastructure protection and transportation system expansion. He acknowledged that while disruption is unavoidable, it is crucial for future improvements.
Ongoing Projects Affecting the Area
Three major projects will occur concurrently in the vicinity:
- Repair of the arches under the University Bridge.
- Refinishing of the driving surface.
- Water main lining work on 25th Street, beginning the week of May 19 and lasting approximately four months.
Transit System Enhancements
A significant portion of the construction will relate to the bus rapid transit (BRT) system. This will modernize transit routes across the city. The first phase will specifically focus on the area between Clarence Avenue and Hospital Drive, followed by work toward Cumberland Avenue.
Travel Adjustments for Hospital Access
Dan Willems, the city’s technical services director, advised those needing access to the University of Saskatchewan and Royal University Hospital to adjust their routes. Patients and visitors should approach the hospitals using the west-bound lanes of College Drive from the east.
Pedestrian Access and Further Road Work
Despite the closure, pedestrian access on the south side of the University Bridge will remain open. Once the current phase between Clarence Avenue and Hospital Drive concludes, work will initiate on College Drive toward Cumberland Avenue.
Timeline for Completion
Single lane traffic will be managed in both directions on the south half of College Drive during the northern corridor’s renovations. Completion is anticipated by late August, ensuring readiness for the fall semester at the University of Saskatchewan. Further phases will commence in September and October.
Future Plans
Phase 2 of the transit project is set for summer 2027 between Cumberland Avenue and Preston Avenue South. More details regarding this subsequent stage will be disclosed in spring.
