Wickes Implements New £13 Rule Across UK Stores This April

Wickes has implemented a new pay structure in its UK stores, effective from April 1. The hardware giant has raised the minimum hourly wage for retail assistants to nearly £13. This adjustment reflects a broader trend among retailers responding to cost-of-living challenges faced by many British households.
Details of the New Minimum Wage
The changes to wage rates are as follows:
- National Living Wage for those aged 21 and over: £12.71
- National Minimum Wage for ages 18-20: £10.85
- Minimum wage for apprentices and under-18s: £8.00
Expansion Plans and Job Creation
Wickes also announced its ambition to expand its presence in the UK. The company plans to open an additional 70 stores over the coming years, aiming to reach a total of 300 locations nationwide.
This initiative is expected to create 2,000 new job opportunities across the country.
CEO Insights on the Housing Market
David Wood, Wickes’ Chief Executive, commented on the unique state of the DIY market in the UK. He noted that the country’s housing stock is the oldest in Europe, leading to a continual need for repairs and improvements. This demographic consists mainly of owner-occupied homes, which serve as significant financial assets for their owners.
Financial Performance
Wickes has reported robust financial growth, with sales increasing by 6% to reach £1.6 billion. Pre-tax profits also saw a significant rise, climbing from £23 million to £49 million for the year ending December 27, 2025.
Wood emphasized that the results demonstrate effective progress against their strategy. The company has experienced volume-driven growth across all areas of operation. In response to the success of their store refit and expansion strategy, Wickes is accelerating investments aimed at future growth, enhancing its distinctive offerings throughout the UK.
