Blue Jays Move Alejandro Kirk to IL, Recall Valenzuela for Thumb Fracture

The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Saturday that Alejandro Kirk has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left thumb fracture. In his absence, rookie catcher Branon Valenzuela has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo.

Alejandro Kirk’s Injury Details

Kirk sustained his injury during Friday’s game against the Chicago White Sox. He exited in the 10th inning after a foul tip struck his catching hand. Following the incident, the 27-year-old informed manager John Schneider and the team’s training staff that he was unable to continue.

Replacement and Impact

Tyler Heineman replaced Kirk but made a crucial error shortly after entering the game. Heineman is scheduled to start on Saturday against the White Sox.

Performance Statistics

Kirk’s current performance reflects struggles at the plate. He is hitting .150 with a .227 on-base percentage and a .350 slugging percentage, with one home run in five games this season.

This injury comes after Kirk’s notable 2025 season, in which he successfully represented the All-Star team for the second time. He achieved a .769 OPS and hit 15 home runs over 130 games.

Branon Valenzuela Joins the Roster

Valenzuela, who is 25 years old, was acquired from the San Diego Padres during last year’s trade deadline in exchange for Will Wagner. He was added to the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster last fall.

Spring Training Performance

During spring training, Valenzuela showcased his skills, hitting 7-for-23 with two extra-base hits. In his first four games of the season with the triple-A Bisons, he recorded three hits, including one home run.

Upcoming Matches

  • Blue Jays vs. Chicago White Sox – Saturday lineup changes due to Kirk’s injury.
  • Heineman to start as catcher in Kirk’s absence.
  • Valenzuela expected to make his debut soon.

The Blue Jays will need to adjust their strategy as they continue their season without Kirk, who has been a valuable player since joining the team.
