“Starring in Oliver! at Nine Sparked My West End Journey”

Actor Tyler, 45, reflects on his journey from humble beginnings in Rushden, Northamptonshire, to performing in the West End. His career was ignited by a production of Oliver! in 1989, staged by the Irthlingborough Entertainment Society.
First Steps in Theatre
Tyler describes Oliver! as his first full-scale performance. Before this, he participated in talent shows and reviews. “It was the first time I really had to learn lines and take direction. I just remember absolutely loving it,” he said. The experience fueled his passion for acting and made him think, “I want to do this when I’m older.”
Theatre Appearances
Following Oliver!, Tyler appeared in multiple productions in the region. Notable venues included:
- Sharnbrook Mill Theatre, near Bedford
- Royal & Derngate, Northampton
One of his memorable roles was in The Sound of Music, which further established his presence in local theatre.
Pursuing Drama School
After completing sixth form, Tyler planned to attend drama school. However, financial constraints led him to take up a job on a cruise ship instead. He hoped this opportunity would provide funds for drama school.
Discovering a New Path
While working on the cruise ship, unexpected opportunities arose. Tyler continued to land theatre roles, which led him to rethink his career path. He recalled a moment while performing in Grease in the West End when a fellow cast member encouraged him. “I need to try and get into theatre school,” he mentioned, but the response was illuminating: “You probably don’t need it now.”
Ultimately, Tyler’s journey illustrates how passion and opportunity can often lead to success, sometimes in ways one might never predict.
