Trump Deploys National Guard to Chicago; Judge Halts Federal Troop Plan in Portland

The Trump administration’s strategy to address unrest in Democrat-led cities escalated this weekend with two significant events. A federal judge halted the deployment of National Guard troops in Portland, while the president authorized the deployment of hundreds of National Guard members to Chicago amid ongoing protests.

Federal Troop Deployment Halted in Portland

A District Judge in Oregon, Karin Immergut, issued a temporary restraining order on Saturday. This order blocks President Trump from deploying National Guard troops to Portland, citing potential violations of constitutional authority.

Immergut’s ruling indicated that the demonstrations in Portland were largely peaceful and did not pose a “danger of rebellion.” The judge noted substantial evidence supporting this claim and emphasized that recent incidents involving federal officers were manageable by local law enforcement.

  • Judge: Karin Immergut
  • Location: Portland, Oregon
  • Order issued: Saturday

The administration plans to appeal the judge’s decision to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Meanwhile, local leaders aim to extend the restraining order beyond its initial 14-day period.

Protests Continue in Portland

Following the ruling, protests persisted late into Saturday night near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland. Demonstrators rallied both for and against the troop deployment, leading to clashes with federal law enforcement, including the use of pepper balls and tear gas.

Portland police confirmed no significant crimes occurred during the protests and made no arrests. They referred inquiries about federal law enforcement actions to the appropriate agencies.

National Guard to Chicago Amid Rising Tensions

In contrast, President Trump authorized 300 members of the Illinois National Guard to be deployed to Chicago. This decision emerged against a backdrop of escalating tensions around anti-ICE protests, as reported by a White House spokesperson.

  • Troop Count: 300 National Guard members
  • Location: Chicago, Illinois
  • Authorization Date: Saturday

Governor JB Pritzker expressed outrage, claiming the federal government issued an ultimatum to deploy troops against the state’s will. He criticized the federal strategy, suggesting it undermines local authority.

Violence Escalates in Chicago

Tensions peaked in Chicago after US Customs and Border Protection agents fired defensive shots at a woman who had rammed her vehicle into a law enforcement automobile. The woman, identified as Marimar Martinez, was later placed in FBI custody after receiving medical care.

Another suspect involved, Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, is also in custody. It remains unclear whether either individual has been formally charged.

Governor Pritzker voiced concerns regarding the Trump administration’s control over the narrative surrounding these interactions, calling their communication practices “outrageous.” The conflict illustrates the ongoing complexities between state and federal responses to protests and law enforcement measures in America’s cities.
