Pirates and Top Prospect Griffin Finalize Long-Term Deal Before Debut

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the process of finalizing a groundbreaking nine-year, $140 million contract extension with top prospect Konnor Griffin. This significant move follows reports that the 19-year-old shortstop will make his major league debut during the Pirates’ home opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

Konnor Griffin’s Historic Deal

If completed, this contract would represent the largest deal ever offered to a player who has yet to play in the major leagues. Griffin was selected as the ninth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft while coming out of high school in Mississippi. This selection followed the Pirates’ first pick in 2023, when they chose Paul Skenes first overall from LSU.

Griffin’s Rising Stardom

Griffin is quickly joining a trend where young prospects secure long-term contracts prior to their debuts. Earlier this season, Colt Emerson of the Seattle Mariners and Cooper Pratt of the Milwaukee Brewers each signed contracts spanning eight years.

Spring Training Performance

  • Spring Training Stats: .171 batting average, 4 home runs in 16 games
  • Triple-A Indianapolis Stats: .438 batting average, .571 on-base percentage, .625 slugging percentage
  • Current performance includes 1 RBI and 3 stolen bases

According to MLB.com, Konnor Griffin is ranked as the top prospect in baseball. His impressive performance at the Triple-A level has generated much anticipation regarding his impact in the major leagues.
