Calgary Police Charge Man in South Asian Extortion, Daycare Threats

Calgary police have made a significant breakthrough in an ongoing investigation related to extortion threats against the South Asian community. The first arrest has been made in connection with this troubling trend. Rana Cheema, a 45-year-old man, has been charged with extortion and making threats.
Details of the Charges
Cheema’s arrest follows a series of escalating incidents that authorities link to demands for large sums of money and control over businesses. The timeline of these events spans from March 4 to March 22. Reports indicate that the incidents included:
- A shooting incident at a residence on Martindale Boulevard N.E.
- Multiple acts of property damage.
- Intimidation and vandalism at two daycares located outside Calgary.
According to Superintendent Jeff Bell, the acts of violence aimed not only to intimidate individuals but also entire families and communities.
Daycare Threats
The targeted daycares suffered damages after hours, which meant that no children were present during the incidents. Despite these threats, the police assured the public that there is no broader threat to daycare facilities in the area.
Growing Concern of Extortion
Violent extortion attempts against South Asian communities are an escalating issue in various Canadian cities, including Calgary. Since January 2025, there have been 41 reported extortion attempts in Calgary. Of these, 18 incidents involved shootings directed at homes, businesses, or vehicles, although thankfully, no injuries have been reported thus far.
Ongoing Investigations
Authorities have referred 45 names to the Canada Border Services Agency as part of this investigation. This action has led to multiple removal orders for suspects believed to be residing in Calgary. Investigators are still looking for additional suspects connected to these extortion cases.
Future Steps
Superintendent Bell emphasized that this arrest marks only the beginning of ongoing enforcement efforts. He stated, “Calgary is not a place where extortion, intimidation, or violence will be tolerated. We are taking a hard stance and will continue down this path.” Cheema’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 22.
