AAP Dismisses Raghav Chadha as Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader, Blocks Speaking Time

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken a significant step by dismissing Raghav Chadha from his position as the deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha. This decision was confirmed through a communication sent to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, indicating a new direction in AAP’s parliamentary tactics. Furthermore, the party requested that Chadha be denied speaking time from their allocated quota in the Upper House.
New Leadership in the Rajya Sabha
AAP has proposed Ashok Mittal to succeed Chadha as the new deputy leader. The party urged the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to expedite this appointment. Currently, AAP has a total of 10 members in the Rajya Sabha, with seven representatives from Punjab and three from Delhi.
Raghav Chadha’s Political Journey
- Raghav Chadha has been a pivotal figure in AAP since its formation.
- He began his career working alongside Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Lokpal Bill in 2012.
- Chadha became the youngest treasurer of AAP after the party’s success in the 2015 Delhi elections.
- He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections for South Delhi but was defeated by Ramesh Bidhuri.
- Chadha won the 2020 Delhi Assembly election from Rajendra Nagar and later served as vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board.
- In 2022, he was appointed the youngest Rajya Sabha MP at the age of 33.
Chadha’s Contributions in Parliament
Throughout his time in the Rajya Sabha, Raghav Chadha has raised important public issues. Recently, he drew attention to the concept of “sarpanch pati” or “panchayat pati.” He criticized the practice where women elected to reserved Panchayat positions often lack real authority, calling for the government to empower female representatives.
Moreover, he spotlighted the critical issue of menstrual hygiene in Parliament. Chadha emphasized that lack of access to sanitary supplies affects over 35 crore women and girls, inhibiting their health, education, and equality. His arguments highlighted systemic failures and critiqued the associated social stigma surrounding menstrual health.
This dismissal marks a notable change within AAP, reflective of its evolving strategy in the Rajya Sabha. As the party moves forward, attention will now shift toward Ashok Mittal as he steps into the role of deputy leader and the future direction of AAP’s parliamentary engagement.
