Canada Launches 30-Day or Free Passport Processing Guarantee

Canada has announced a significant change to its passport application processing system. Starting April 1, the country will implement a new policy to ensure faster service for applicants. If the processing of a passport or travel document exceeds 30 business days, the government will automatically issue a full refund of the application fees.

Details of the New Passport Processing Guarantee

This initiative aims to enhance the reliability of passport services for Canadians. The processing timeline begins once a complete application is submitted and continues until the document is printed and verified.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab expressed the government’s commitment to providing high-quality services. She stated, “Canadians expect reliable services from their government. Our new refund policy reflects this commitment.” The government is determined to maximize efficiency in its operations while ensuring a positive experience for applicants.

Exclusions to the Refund Policy

While this refund policy applies to various passport services, there are exceptions:

  • Replacement, transfer, or certified copy fees.
  • Child refugee travel documents and certificates of identity.
  • Urgent and express passport services, which follow different timelines.
  • Applications processed under special circumstances that may affect operations.

Current Processing Times and Fee Adjustments

According to the government, service standards for passport applications can range between 10 and 20 business days, plus mailing time. The time frame depends on the Service Canada Centre location or if the application is submitted via an embassy, consulate, or by mail.

Additionally, fee adjustments for Canadian passports will come into effect on March 31, 2026. This is the first increase in passport fees since 2013 and relates to inflation and rising production costs for secure travel documents.

The government assures that it is committed to ensuring Canadians have access to secure and timely passport services. These enhancements are part of broader efforts to improve the passport delivery system and respond to the needs of applicants effectively.
