According to La Presse, Carmant’s decision to rejoin the CAQ comes earlier than expected. Initially, he considered returning only if Christine Fréchette won the leadership race. However, he chose to accompany Legault through his final days in office.

Legault praised Carmant, saying, “Quebecers are fortunate to have someone like Lionel involved in politics.” He acknowledged Carmant’s significant contributions as a minister and his loyalty to the CAQ family.
This week marks Legault’s last as premier, with parliamentary recess scheduled next week. CAQ members will select their new leader on April 12.
Carmant’s Background and Future Plans
In his emotional return, Carmant noted, “I am very happy that our journey with the CAQ ends as it began: together.” He is one of the founding members of the CAQ and was persuaded by Legault to enter politics.
Carmant had resigned in October 2022 due to disagreements over controversial legislation affecting physicians. He prioritized family concerns surrounding this law, which faced significant opposition from his wife and daughter, both of whom are also doctors.
The upcoming negotiations with the Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec (FMSQ) were initially a condition for Carmant’s return. Legault confirmed that issues displeasing Carmant had already been resolved, paving the way for his reintegration into the caucus.
