Lionel Carmant Rejoins CAQ Party

Lionel Carmant is rejoining the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) party earlier than anticipated. The former minister, who contemplated a return after Christine Fréchette’s expected victory, has opted to support Prime Minister François Legault through his final days in office. Sources indicate that Carmant’s decision is motivated by friendship with Legault.

Carmant’s Return to CAQ

The ex-delegate minister for Social Services will officially return to the CAQ caucus this Wednesday. He is expected to confirm this news during a brief speech in Quebec City.

Legault’s Departure and Leadership Transition

François Legault is nearing the end of his term as Premier of Quebec, with his final day in the Salon Rouge planned for Thursday. The parliamentary members will break next week, as the CAQ is set to elect a new leader on April 12.

Negotiations and Future Prospects

Despite ongoing deadlock in negotiations between the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) and the government, Carmant has decided to rejoin his political family. This choice comes after maintaining communication with Legault, particularly following his resignation amid the controversial Bill 2 concerning physicians.

  • Carmant surprised many by appearing at the second leadership debate for the CAQ, supporting candidate Christine Fréchette.
  • He expressed willingness to rejoin the caucus if Fréchette won the leadership race, while remaining noncommittal regarding Bernard Drainville’s potential candidacy.

Background on Carmant and Dubé

Carmant, a founding signatory of the CAQ manifesto, resigned from the caucus in October to prioritize family concerns. His wife and daughter, both medical professionals, were opposed to Bill 2, which prompted his exit.

The future of Christian Dubé, another ex-CAQ member who resigned in December due to dissatisfaction with agreements made with family physicians, remains uncertain. Legault stated he has not been in contact with Dubé but welcomed his return should he agree with the ongoing arrangements.

Both Carmant and Dubé are currently serving as independent deputies following their respective resignations.
