KKR Faces Challenges with Muzarabani Ahead of IPL 2026, Says Former Champion

Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) player Manoj Tiwary expressed doubts regarding Blessing Muzarabani’s performance in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Tiwary, a champion with KKR in 2012, indicated that the Zimbabwean bowler may face challenges in conditions outside of Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Challenges for KKR with Muzarabani Ahead of IPL 2026
KKR signed Muzarabani after he showcased remarkable skills at the T20 World Cup 2026, where he shared the title of joint-highest wicket-taker. The 6 ft 8” pace bowler claimed the spotlight with 13 wickets in just six matches, including a standout performance of 4/17 against Australia.
Muzarabani’s Previous IPL Experience
- Muzarabani joined Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) last IPL season as a replacement for injured player Lungi Ngidi.
- Despite RCB winning the tournament, Muzarabani did not participate in any matches.
- His impressive T20 World Cup performance earned him recognition from KKR scouts.
Concerns Over Effective Use on Indian Pitches
Tiwary emphasized the varying conditions across Indian cricket grounds. “The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai provides bounce, while Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru offers some movement. Muzarabani could thrive at these venues, but might struggle elsewhere,” he observed.
Bowling Strategy for KKR
With injuries sidelining Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, KKR faces significant selection challenges. Additionally, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana will not be available until mid-April.
- KKR may consider either Muzarabani or several Indian bowlers, including Umran Malik and Navdeep Saini.
- The confirmed foreign players are Finn Allen, Sunil Narine, and Cameron Green.
- Indian bowlers Vaibhav Arora and Varun Chakaravarthy are also expected to feature.
Pace vs. Spin Decisions
With the Wankhede Stadium showing favorable conditions for spin bowlers in the recent tournament, KKR may opt for a spin-heavy lineup. Tiwary suggested that Muzarabani may primarily serve as an observer during IPL 2026, adding, “With three fast bowlers likely in the squad and potential depth in spin options, including Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine, his inclusion seems unlikely.”
As KKR gears up for the IPL 2026 season, the strategic use of Blessing Muzarabani remains a pivotal topic amid concerns and competition for a limited number of spots in the playing XI.
