The Sheffield Half Marathon is set to attract thousands of participants, despite road closures in the city. Among the runners is 18-year-old Jason Ciril, who will experience his first half marathon while battling functional neurological disorder (FND).
Understanding Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
FND is a complex condition that disrupts the brain’s signaling pathways. This disorder can manifest in a variety of symptoms, including:
- Weakness
- Tremors
- Seizures
Notably, FND is not linked to any physical disease or damage. Its origins remain unclear, although it frequently associates with mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
Prevalence in Sheffield
According to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, approximately 25% of neurology patients in the area experience FND. While many individuals may face temporary symptoms, there are also severe cases that persist longer.
Jason Ciril’s Journey
Jason has additional challenges, as he also lives with spina bifida. His struggles intensified when FND resulted in repeated seizures and temporary paralysis in his legs, leading to a four-month hospital stay. Jason reflects on his experience, saying, “In May, I got out of the hospital and I was in a wheelchair. I had to be hoisted into my bed and I started to think this was my life now.”
He shared the emotional toll of his condition, stating, “I’d got nothing, I couldn’t do anything anymore or be there for my brothers.” Despite these obstacles, he remains determined to participate in the upcoming Sheffield Half Marathon, symbolizing hope and resilience for others facing similar battles.
The event will not only showcase athletic endurance but also raise awareness about conditions like FND, inspiring many to confront their challenges head-on.
