Piastri Delighted to Narrow Gap with Mercedes

Oscar Piastri recently expressed optimism following his strong performance in Qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix. Although McLaren still lacks the pace to compete directly with Mercedes, his third-place finish marks a positive development for the team.

Piastri’s Journey in 2023 Season

This season has been challenging for the Australian driver. Piastri faced setbacks early on, crashing before his home race in Australia and experiencing an electrical failure at the Chinese Grand Prix that prevented him from competing.

Despite these issues, Piastri demonstrated impressive skills at the Suzuka Circuit. He topped the timesheets in Free Practice 2 (FP2) and secured a solid third place in Qualifying. This achievement came behind Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell.

Qualifying Highlights

  • Piastri achieved a qualifying time of 1m 29.132s, placing him 0.354s behind Antonelli’s pole position.
  • His teammate, Lando Norris, qualified fifth after facing an Energy Recovery System (ERS) issue that limited his time in Free Practice 3.

Piastri acknowledged the need for McLaren to address its performance gaps but noted the progress made during this race weekend. He stated, “We’ve been able to exploit the power unit a bit better and just optimise things a bit more.”

Looking Forward

While Piastri remains realistic about the challenges ahead, he is hopeful for improved results. He believes that the unique characteristics of the Suzuka Circuit may have contributed to the team’s recent advancements, despite no major upgrades being introduced to the car.

He concluded, “It’s nice to be making some progress but there’s still a pretty big gap to find.” As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Piastri and McLaren to see if they can continue closing the gap to Mercedes.
