Devdutt Padikkal: From Timid Student to Star RCB Batsman

Devdutt Padikkal, the star batsman of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), recently visited his former school, St. Joseph’s Boys High School (SJBHS). This impromptu visit allowed him to reconnect with his past, walking the corridors he frequented from 2013 to 2016. Principal Fr. Norwin Pereira expressed joy at Padikkal’s return, emphasizing his status as a role model for current students.
Memorable Moments in Padikkal’s Journey
During his visit, memories of Padikkal’s early days surfaced. In 2015, when renowned cricketer Rahul Dravid inaugurated the SJBHS indoor sports facility, a 15-year-old Padikkal was selected to present Dravid with a memento. Today, as the captain of the Karnataka Ranji team and an RCB batsman, Padikkal’s career is a source of pride for his former teachers and classmates.
A Teacher’s Fond Memories
Gowri Mirlay-Achanta, Padikkal’s former history teacher, reflected on his enthusiasm back then. She recalled thinking that he would one day accomplish significant feats. “Seeing Devdutt’s excitement, I thought to myself that one day he will also be in that chair receiving something big,” she noted. Mirlay-Achanta, with 40 years of teaching experience, highlighted how focused and hardworking her students, including Padikkal, were despite typical teenage distractions.
Career Beginnings at SJBHS
Padikkal’s journey in cricket truly began when he transferred to SJBHS in Class 8. His desire to play was fueled by his parents’ commitment to providing him the best opportunities. “After repeated suggestions during practice, we allowed him to play for an hour. He performed remarkably,” recalled his high school coach, Mehboob Pasha.
- Padikkal was initially a student at Army Public School.
- He proved himself by scoring a half-century in an inter-school match.
- Despite his timidity, he volunteered to open in his first match and scored a century.
This initial performance marked the beginning of Padikkal’s promising cricket career. From a timid boy stepping onto the field to becoming a star batsman for RCB, Padikkal’s journey exemplifies determination and talent.
Conclusion
Devdutt Padikkal’s rise from a student at SJBHS to a celebrated cricketer embodies the spirit of perseverance. His story continues to inspire young talents aspiring to make their mark in sports.
