Toronto Faces Road Closures, Parking Limits, and Transit Changes for World Cup

Toronto is set to undergo significant changes in June for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to manage increased foot traffic as fans converge on the city. The World Cup will feature six men’s matches, showcasing teams like Germany, Canada, and Senegal from June 12 to July 2. To prepare for the influx of visitors and ensure smooth transit, the city plans to implement road closures, restrict parking, and encourage the use of public transportation.
Transit and Traffic Management Plans
The city’s transportation plan emphasizes a shift towards transit use. Officials aim for 70% of attendees to arrive at the stadium via Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) services or GO trains. Additional estimated modes of transport include:
- 13% walking or cycling
- 10% utilizing ride-shares and taxis
- 7% driving, despite no designated parking available
Road Closures and Parking Restrictions
To facilitate the World Cup events, several roads will experience full and partial closures. Key changes include:
- Complete closure of Strachan Avenue from Lake Shore Boulevard to East Liberty Street for 10 hours, starting five hours before each match.
- Closures on Fleet Street, Fort York Boulevard, and Dufferin Street.
- Lake Shore Boulevard West will be closed from Bathurst Street to British Columbia Road for 10 hours.
- Local traffic only allowed in Liberty Village during road closure hours.
Enhanced Public Transit Services
In response to the expected increase in transit users, the TTC will enhance streetcar services during the World Cup. The schedules will be as follows:
- King streetcar: every 4 minutes during peak weekday hours
- Harbourfront streetcar: every 7 minutes
- Bathurst streetcar: approximately every 5 minutes
Additionally, Toronto’s bike share program will expand near the stadium, including a valet service to accommodate cyclists even when bike docks are full.
These measures aim to ensure a smooth experience for both local residents and international visitors during this prestigious sporting event.
