Jay-Z’s Disciplined Studio Process
According to Pharrell, Jay-Z approaches songwriting without writing down his lyrics. Instead, he immerses himself in the creative flow. “When Jay is working, he’s often looking in a direction—sometimes down, sometimes forward,” he said. This concentration allows Jay-Z to enter a “flow state,” where he is not easily distracted, regardless of the activity around him.
The Art of Mumble and Flow
Pharrell elaborated on Jay-Z’s unique method. He explained that Jay often hums or mumbles while experimenting with lyrics. This practice helps him internalize the rhythm of the track. “He’s familiarizing himself with the track so he can flow,” Pharrell noted.
