Water Order Lifted: West Kelowna Residents May Resume Consumption

Residents of West Kelowna’s Tallus Ridge and Shannon Woods neighborhoods can resume consuming tap water. The City of West Kelowna lifted the do-not-consume order following successful quality tests.
Water Order Lifted in West Kelowna
After consulting with Interior Health, officials confirmed that water quality meets all provincial and federal guidelines. Prior to the recall, the Tallus reservoir underwent thorough cleaning and inspection due to a recent security breach.
Security Breach Details
The breach, which triggered the initial water consumption advisory, involved an unauthorized access hatch at the reservoir. Quick action from city crews allowed for the immediate isolation of the reservoir after receiving an intrusion alarm.
Enhanced security measures have been put in place since the incident. The Tallus reservoir is expected to be refilled and returned to service later this week. Until then, the Shannon Woods reservoir will continue to supply water to these neighborhoods.
Police Investigation Update
- As of the latest updates, the RCMP has identified the individuals involved in the security breach.
- Those individuals are cooperating with ongoing police investigations.
- Initial assessments confirm that the incident caused only minor property damage.
Water Safety and Testing
Initially, a do-not-consume order affected approximately 300 homes. Early test results indicated no bacteriological contamination within the reservoir or distribution system. As officials awaited further results concerning potential contamination from metals or chemicals, residents were urged to comply with safety measures.
City officials closely monitored the situation. They conducted reservoir inspections and promptly instituted protocols to prevent any contaminated water from entering the system. Additionally, residents under the order received access to free water from a bulk filling station located at Shannon Lake and Asquith Roads.
Future Security Measures
In light of the incident, the City of West Kelowna is reviewing security protocols. Potential upgrades may include enhanced locks, improved fencing, and additional surveillance cameras to prevent future breaches.
