PSU Plans New Dorm for First-Year Students

Portland State University (PSU) has initiated plans for a new residence hall aimed at first-year students. The proposed dormitory will be a six-story structure covering 124,000 square feet, located at 1831 S.W. Park Ave. The project, first announced in January, aims to create a modern living space that enhances student life on campus.

Project Overview

The new dormitory will feature approximately 550 beds, primarily in double-occupancy units, with some single and triple-occupancy options. This development signifies PSU’s commitment to providing quality housing specifically designed for first-year students.

Design and Amenities

  • Designed by GBD Architects
  • Constructed by Fortis Construction
  • Private restrooms in each unit
  • Multiple lounges on each floor
  • Study nooks and classrooms
  • Community and allergen-free kitchens
  • A dedicated music practice room
  • Offices for staff
  • A large porch area facing the South Park Blocks

The design focuses on creating an inviting and supportive atmosphere for new students, with various communal spaces to foster interaction and study. The location of the residence hall has been described by Ashley Wendler, PSU’s executive director of University Housing and Residence Life, as one of the most desirable on campus.

Meeting Student Needs

This new construction aims to accommodate the housing needs of incoming freshmen while freeing up space in existing halls for other student populations, including transfer and graduate students. Currently, first-year students reside in the Broadway and Ondine residence halls.

As PSU expects stable enrollment figures in the coming years, this initiative is part of an effort to update aging facilities and enhance the overall campus experience. The new dormitory will compete with similar establishments, offering modern amenities that are essential for student satisfaction.

Affordability and Accessibility

PSU officials have confirmed that the housing prices will align with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines. This decision is crucial in a city known for its high living costs.

  • No large security deposits required
  • No proof of income needed for applicants
  • Low application fee of $50

Wendler emphasized that PSU is committed to offering “low-barrier housing” to reduce obstacles for students seeking accommodation. This approach aims to improve educational outcomes by making living arrangements more accessible.

Timeline for Construction

Work on the new residence hall is projected to commence in late 2026, as PSU plans to deconstruct the existing Blackstone and Montgomery buildings. Construction is slated to begin in winter 2027, with a goal of welcoming students by fall 2028.
