New National Lottery Draw Expected Soon After £450M Tech Upgrade

The National Lottery is on the verge of introducing a new draw game, thanks to a significant technological overhaul worth £450 million. This upgrade has successfully attracted an additional one million online players, indicating growing engagement with lottery games.
Major Technological Upgrade
Allwyn, the lottery’s operator, completed a comprehensive IT enhancement that transferred 18 million player records and over three billion historical transactions. This transformation also impacted the technology used by retail partners.
Service Interruption and Improvements
As part of the upgrade, the National Lottery website and app experienced a 24-hour downtime in January. The improvements to digital systems are expected to facilitate new game launches and draw in more participants.
New Player Protections
- Mandatory personal deposit limits
- Mandatory spending limits
- Automatic logouts after 60 minutes of activity
- 10-minute cooling-off periods
- Regular 20-minute “reality checks” for instant game players
Shifts in Lottery Operations
Allwyn took over the National Lottery’s operations in 2024, succeeding Camelot, which had managed the draw since its inception in 1994. New statistics indicate a substantial increase in digital engagement, with the company reporting a 10% rise in digital sales last year.
Revenue Growth
In 2025, the National Lottery generated £4.1 billion in digital sales, marking a 9.8% increase from the previous year. The digital player base rose to 12.1 million, a million more than in the prior year.
Total Sales and Contributions
Overall sales, including in-store purchases, reached £8.1 billion, showing a growth of 3.5%. Notably, over £1.7 billion was allocated for ‘good causes’ such as health, education, arts, sports, and charitable initiatives, while £967 million was contributed in taxes.
Leadership Insights
Andria Vidler, the CEO of Allwyn UK, expressed delight over the successful completion of the upgrade. She emphasized the potential for generating increased revenue for good causes through the introduction of new games.
As the National Lottery embarks on this exciting phase, both new game offerings and enhanced player protections look set to transform the experience for millions of players across the UK.
