German President Condemns Iran War as a ‘Disastrous Mistake’

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier recently condemned the war in Iran, labeling it a “disastrous mistake” that violates international law. This statement underscores his criticism of U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump, marking a significant shift in German relations with its foremost post-war ally.
Condemnation of the Iran War
Steinmeier, who holds a largely ceremonial role, expressed his views more candidly than many German politicians. In a speech at the foreign ministry, he stated, “Our foreign policy does not become more convincing just because we do not call a breach of international law a breach of international law.”
He argued the war in Iran lacks justification, asserting that claims of an imminent attack on U.S. targets are unfounded. Furthermore, he described the conflict as not only unnecessary but also a politically damaging error.
Impact on German Foreign Relations
Steinmeier indicated that Trump’s tenure has resulted in a profound rupture in German foreign relations, akin to the implications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He stated, “There will be no going back in transatlantic relations to before January 20, 2025,” highlighting the lasting effects of current policies.
Shifts in Economic Alliances
Germany is reevaluating its dependencies following the lessons learned from its reliance on Russia. The President emphasized the need to establish alternatives to U.S.-dominated technology, particularly in defense and related sectors.
- China has emerged as Germany’s leading trading partner, surpassing the U.S. in early 2025.
- Trade between the U.S. and Germany exceeded 163 billion euros (approximately US$190 billion) in the first eight months of 2025.
Opportunities for Europe
Steinmeier noted the ongoing discussions between the Pentagon and Anthropic regarding AI safety as a potential turning point for Europe. He stated, “Europe as a technology hub has talent, markets, opportunities, and importantly, ethical standards. We should build on these.”
This call for strategic independence and technological innovation reflects a broader shift in Germany’s approach to international relations and economic partnerships in response to global challenges.
