PSU Linebacker Rojas Sidelined by Long-Term Injury

Penn State linebacker Tony Rojas faces a long-term absence due to an undisclosed injury sustained during practice. This situation poses a significant challenge for the Nittany Lions, as Rojas is a crucial player for the team.
Impact of Rojas’ Injury on Penn State
Rojas, a junior from Fairfax, Virginia, has been a standout performer for the Nittany Lions. He is currently tied for the team lead with 4.5 tackles for loss and ranks second overall with 25 tackles this season. Last year, he transitioned into the starting role and finished the season with 58 tackles, including 6 for a loss, along with 3 interceptions. One of his interceptions was notably returned for a touchdown during the College Football Playoff first round against SMU.
Coaching Adjustments Following Injury
Head coach James Franklin discussed the steps the team will take in Rojas’ absence. Senior Dom DeLuca is expected to see an increase in playing time, while freshmen Cam Smith and Alex Tatsch are also under consideration for more significant roles. Franklin noted,
- “What’s helpful is we have these Sunday scrimmages, so we’ve had a chance to evaluate those guys each week.”
- Tatsch has been working more with the varsity team early this season.
- Cam Smith is now receiving opportunities to showcase his abilities as well.
Previous Injury History
Interestingly, Rojas played much of the previous season while dealing with a left shoulder injury. He underwent surgery after the Nittany Lions’ playoff run, which may factor into his current situation.
The seventh-ranked Nittany Lions are looking to bounce back after losing their first game against Oregon. This Saturday, they will face winless UCLA, making Rojas’ absence even more critical as the team hopes to secure a victory.
