All Blacks Legend Joins Rennie’s Coaching Team

Phil Healey has joined the All Blacks coaching team as the new head of performance. He takes over from Nic Gill, who recently accepted a position with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Healey brings invaluable experience from his tenure with coach Dave Rennie at Glasgow Warriors from 2017 to 2018 and served on the management team of the Georgia national team during the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He also contributed to the All Blacks XV management in 2022 and is presently the director of athletic performance at the Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan.
New Coaching Staff and Changes
As part of the coaching reshuffle, Rennie has appointed Tana Umaga, Neil Barnes, Mike Blair, and Jason Ryan as assistant coaches. Notably, Scott Hansen has been replaced by Blair. Additionally, Tamati Ellison has transitioned to head coach of the Māori All Blacks for their upcoming fixtures in June against Japan.
Coaching Team’s Expertise
Rennie expressed confidence in his coaching staff. In his remarks, he stated:
- Neil Barnes offers exceptional leadership and strategic support.
- Jason Ryan is recognized as one of the leading forwards coaches.
- Tana Umaga contributes significant cultural insight and defensive strategy.
- Mike Blair emphasizes innovation and detail in attack strategies.
The head coach noted, “This is a very experienced and highly skilled coaching team.” Rennie also acknowledged the contributions of the former All Blacks assistant coaches, appreciating their professionalism throughout the appointment process.
Tana Umaga’s Commitment
Umaga, a legendary figure with a rich connection to the All Blacks, remarked on his return to the team. Having retired as the first captain of Pacific heritage two decades ago, he sees this role as significant.
“It’s a privilege and an honour,” Umaga stated, emphasizing the cultural significance of the All Blacks and his deep personal ties to both the team and the country. He added, “These teams are part of me.”
Despite his ambitions with the All Blacks, Umaga pledged to honor his commitments at Moana Pasifika, stating that he aims to leave a positive impact before concluding his season there.
Looking Ahead
With the new appointments, the All Blacks coaching team is geared up for the challenges ahead. Each coach brings a unique skill set that promises to enhance the team’s performance as they prepare for upcoming competitions. The focus remains on driving success and building a legacy within rugby.
