France-Élaine Duranceau Backs Christine Fréchette in CAQ Leadership Race

Christine Fréchette has secured significant backing in her pursuit of the CAQ leadership. France-Élaine Duranceau, the president of the Treasury Board, announced her support via social media. This endorsement comes just ahead of the first official debate for the leadership, emphasizing the importance of timing in her political maneuvering.
Support from France-Élaine Duranceau
Duranceau expressed her support for Fréchette early in the campaign. However, she was cautious about making her endorsement public too soon. She wanted to ensure that her backing did not overshadow pressing negotiations around healthcare, particularly involving specialist doctors.
“Even if I say I support you, that’s not what people want to hear,” Duranceau remarked, underlining the focus on ongoing issues that require attention.
Timing After Budget Announcement
The timing of the announcement aligns with the unveiling of the Girard budget, which Duranceau developed while navigating budget management. However, it is important to note that she was not actively involved in the allocation of funds among various programs.
Fréchette’s Strong Track Record
In explaining her choice, Duranceau highlighted Fréchette’s achievements in her previous roles in Immigration and Economy. She effectively advocated for an increase in the number of immigrants accepted into Quebec. This occurred despite political pressure after the Premier had campaigned for reduced immigration thresholds.
Duranceau observed Fréchette’s resilience and ability to negotiate effectively among her colleagues, which she described as commendable given the resistance from other ministers.
Leadership Qualities
Fréchette also adeptly managed her responsibilities during a parliamentary commission on energy reform, stepping in during a critical period. Duranceau believes Fréchette possesses the qualities necessary to be a prime minister. She emphasized the need for a disciplined approach amidst emotional pressures.
Growing Support Base
- Duranceau’s support marks her as the 35th CAQ member to back Fréchette.
- In contrast, Bernard Drainville, Fréchette’s main competitor, has garnered the support of 15 members.
The first debate between the two candidates will take place today at 10 AM, marking an important moment in the campaign. Although previously, candidates presented ideas at an event organized by young CAQ members, direct exchanges had not occurred.
Upcoming Leadership Election
The election for the new leader—and the next Premier—will happen on April 12. Over 20,000 eligible party members will cast their votes in this crucial decision.
