SJHL Commissioner Kyle McIntyre Highlights League Parity Before Playoff Openers

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoffs begin this Friday, marking a thrilling moment for hockey fans across the province. With eight teams vying for the Canterra Seeds Cup, the competition is intense. The ultimate goal is to secure a spot at the Centennial Cup in Summerside, P.E.I., representing the national Junior A championship.
SJHL Commissioner McIntyre on League Parity
SJHL Commissioner Kyle McIntyre highlighted the league’s competitive balance leading into the playoffs. “It’s the most exciting weekend of the season,” he remarked, emphasizing the anticipation surrounding the postseason.
Top Teams and Playoff Matchups
The Flin Flon Bombers earned the top seed in the playoffs, finishing with an impressive record of 41 wins, 11 losses, 3 overtime losses, and 1 shootout loss. They are led by standout goaltender Charlie Tritt, the SJHL Goaltender of the Year. Tritt joined the Bombers in February through a significant trade with the Humboldt Broncos.
The Bombers have a strong playoff history, reaching the SJHL championship series three consecutive years from 2022 to 2024. They will face the Estevan Bruins in the opening round and enjoy the home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
Other notable matchups include:
- Yorkton Terriers vs. Melville Millionaires
- Battlefords North Stars vs. Melfort Mustangs
- Nipawin Hawks vs. Weyburn Red Wings
League Health and Financial Stability
McIntyre expressed positive sentiments about the overall health of the league. He stated that the playoffs are crucial for maintaining financial stability through increased revenue. “The playoff response really helps teams break even,” he noted. Attendance across the league remains consistent, averaging around 800 fans per game, similar to the last few seasons.
Franchise Developments
This season also marked the inaugural year for the Warman Wolverines, who finished with a record of 14 wins and 36 losses. While they did not make the playoffs, McIntyre praised their efforts in creating a fan-friendly experience despite the challenges of assembling a new roster.
Meanwhile, the La Ronge Ice Wolves concluded their first season at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre. McIntyre highlighted the positive impact of their new facility. “It’s great for the players, offering beautiful amenities,” he said, noting the presence of Indigenous players as role models for local youth.
Despite challenges, the Ice Wolves finished last in the league with an 11-40-4-1 record, alongside the Wolverines, Broncos, and Kindersley Klippers, missing out on the playoffs.
The playoff excitement kicks off with Flin Flon and Estevan starting their series at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by Yorkton vs. Melville and Nipawin vs. Weyburn at 7 p.m., and Battlefords vs. Melfort at 7:30 p.m.
