San Diego Comic-Con Málaga Expands Venue Space After Last Year’s Complaints

The San Diego Comic-Con Málaga is set to return from October 1 to October 4, 2023, expanding its venue in response to feedback from last year’s inaugural edition. Fernando Piquer, the newly appointed general director, announced this expansion at a recent press conference in Madrid.

Expansion of Venue Space

To enhance the experience for attendees, the event will increase its space from 10,800 square meters to 19,600 square meters. This significant increase is made possible by adding a second outdoor pavilion at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Málaga (Fycma). As a result, the number of booths will also rise.

Addressing Feedback from Last Year

  • Long waiting times and overcrowded conditions were major complaints from attendees in 2022.
  • Insufficient advance information about guests and programming added to the discontent.
  • Piquer aims to tackle these issues to improve the overall experience for fans.

During his presentation, Piquer acknowledged the challenges faced last year and expressed his commitment to enhancing the event. He humorously mentioned that while lines are inevitable, they will be managed better.

Ticketing and Pricing Updates

This year, an exclusive presale will reward those who supported the event last year. While ticket pricing has increased from 50 euros to 80 euros, the exact date for ticket sales has yet to be announced. It’s important to note that last year’s event sold 120,000 tickets, raising concerns about exceeding Fycma’s daily capacity of 30,000 visitors.

Insights from Previous Editions

  • Last year’s tickets sold out within 24 hours.
  • Attendees faced complaints regarding purchasing tickets without knowing any featured guests.
  • 2022 featured around 300 hours of content, drawing in hundreds of international stars.

Impact and Expectations

The inaugural San Diego Comic-Con Málaga generated an impressive economic impact of 44.3 million euros and attracted 95,784 attendees over four days. However, it also faced scrutiny, with consumer groups reporting over 550 complaints.

As the event gears up for its second iteration, Piquer is focused on refining the experience. The support from Dentsu, the organizing company, has been crucial in ensuring the event’s continuation until at least 2027.

With the expansion and better management strategies in place, the San Diego Comic-Con Málaga aims to meet, if not exceed, the expectations of fans and participants alike.
