Revenu Québec Introduces Automatic Tax Declarations

Revenu Québec has announced a significant initiative to facilitate tax declarations for certain vulnerable individuals in the province. This move comes as part of the 2026-2027 budget, aiming to automate tax declarations for those who typically do not file due to low income or other circumstances.

Automatic Tax Declarations in Québec

The government estimates that around 3% to 5% of Québec’s population fails to submit their tax returns. These individuals often belong to vulnerable groups, including low-income workers, students, and seniors. Many may not realize that by not filing, they are missing out on financial assistance and tax credits.

  • Estimates suggest approximately 10,000 individuals will benefit from automatic tax filings by Revenu Québec.
  • Tax credits like the Solidarity Tax Credit are essential for many in low-income brackets.
  • The automated process is expected to launch for the 2026 tax year.

To qualify, these individuals must have a stable and simple tax situation. If they do not manually file their declarations, they may not receive their entitled amounts until 2027. However, anyone who believes they might qualify for tax credits related to the 2025 tax year should submit their tax returns by the end of April 2025.

Details of the Initiative

The automated filing initiative mirrors a similar program announced in the 2025 federal budget by the Canada Revenue Agency. It aims to simplify the tax process for those often unaware of their eligibility for financial aids.

Pilot Project and Potential Impact

Since 2023, Revenu Québec has been running a pilot project offering simplified tax declarations to certain groups. This pre-filled document requires minimal effort from the taxpayer, as they only need to confirm basic details about their financial situation. However, if the necessary steps are not completed, those individuals do not receive the financial support.

  • Eligible groups for the pilot include:
    • Recipients of last resort financial aid
    • Individuals enrolled in the Basic Income Program
    • Youths aged 18 to 30 earning less than $61,500
    • Low-income individuals with a straightforward financial status

Looking ahead to 2025, students will also be incorporated into the pilot project, increasing the estimated number of affected individuals to 335,000.

As this initiative rolls out, it aims to ensure that vulnerable populations in Québec receive the financial support they rightfully deserve without the burden of complex tax regulations. For many, this could be a vital step toward financial stability.
