Portugal Unveils App to Expedite European Border Controls

Portugal has launched a new mobile application aimed at improving European border controls. Titled “Travel to Europe,” this app is designed to help alleviate the long queues that have become common at Lisbon airport’s border control.

Overview of the Travel to Europe App

The “Travel to Europe” application enables travelers from non-European countries to pre-register their travel information. Users can input personal and travel details, along with a brief questionnaire related to entry conditions. This pre-registration can be accomplished up to 72 hours prior to their arrival at border control.

Objectives of the Application

  • Expedite border control procedures.
  • Reduce waiting times for travelers.
  • Allow parts of travelers’ information to be submitted in advance.

While the app is not mandatory, it significantly aids the process by reducing in-person verification time at border checks. Nonetheless, travelers are still required to go through border control upon arrival.

Background and Recent Developments

The introduction of the app follows the European Entry/Exit System (EES), which commenced in October 2025. This system has faced challenges, particularly with data processing delays.

A recent assessment by the European Commission highlighted “serious deficiencies” in border security at Lisbon airport. This review, conducted from December 15 to 17, prompted the Portuguese government to take urgent action, including the temporary suspension of the EES for three months.

Measures Taken to Enhance Security

To address these concerns, Portugal reinforced security at Lisbon airport in January by deploying 24 soldiers from the National Republican Guard. This reinforcement aimed to expedite the processing of incoming travelers.

Issues with long wait times have not been isolated to Portugal; similar challenges have been reported across other EU countries as the EES was gradually implemented. In some cases, travelers faced wait times extending to 3 AM.

Future of the App

The “Travel to Europe” application is currently available only at Lisbon airport. However, plans are in place to gradually extend its availability to additional airports throughout Portugal in the coming weeks.

By utilizing innovative technology, the Portuguese government aims to enhance border control efficiency, ensuring a smoother travel experience for all incoming passengers, thereby ultimately improving the overall security of European borders.
