Venus Williams Demands Resolution in Miami Open Dispute

Yevgeny Kafelnikov has voiced his opinion on the wildcard allocation for veteran player Venus Williams. The Russian former world No. 1 believes it is time for the 45-year-old to step aside, especially after her recent disappointing performances.
Williams Faces Tough Times
Currently ranked No. 145 in the world, Williams has faced an uphill battle in her recent matches. She has lost her last eight consecutive matches, with her last victory occurring in July 2025 against Peyton Stearns in the Washington Open Round of 32. This disheartening streak has prompted discussions about her future in the sport.
Kafelnikov’s Call for Change
Kafelnikov, who topped the men’s rankings in 1999, expressed his views during an episode of the podcast “Hard Court.” He referenced a statement from Dmitry Tursunov, emphasizing the need for a shift in wildcard distribution. He asserted that opportunities could be better utilized to promote new talents in tennis.
- “Multiple Grand Slam singles champion, world number one, but it’s time,” Kafelnikov quoted.
- He believes the wildcards used for veterans like Williams should instead support emerging players.
Upcoming Matches and Future Prospects
Despite the challenges, Williams is scheduled to compete at the Miami Open, where she will face Francesca Jones in the Round of 128. Her last triumph in a WTA singles tournament dates back to February 2016 at the Kaohsiung Open in Taiwan.
Looking at her form, Williams remarked, “I’m hitting the ball really well. I can’t expect perfection right now, but I know I’m playing good tennis.” She remains hopeful, maintaining that age does not dictate performance on the court.
Other Notable Withdrawals
While Williams prepares to play, British No. 1 Emma Raducanu will not be participating in the Miami Open. Raducanu withdrew to focus on recovery from post-viral symptoms after getting ill while competing in the Middle East last month.
As the tennis community watches closely, Venus Williams continues to fight for her place, while discussions around wildcard allocations spark significant debate regarding the future of the sport.
