Owner Emile Benamor Arrested Following 2023 Old Montreal Fatal Fire

Emile Benamor, a prominent businessman and lawyer, was arrested on Wednesday by the Montreal police. His arrest is linked to involuntary manslaughter and criminal negligence charges. These charges stem from a tragic fire three years ago that claimed the lives of seven people in an Old Montreal building he owned.
Details of the Arrest
Benamor was taken into custody early Wednesday morning by the Major Crimes Unit of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). He was subsequently transported to a processing center. A court appearance is scheduled for later today at the Montreal courthouse.
Charges and Possible Consequences
The arrest warrant indicates that Benamor will face around fifteen charges, including involuntary manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death. This marks a significant development in a case that has raised serious safety concerns about his properties.
The 2023 Old Montreal Fatal Fire
The fatal fire occurred on March 16, 2023, in a heritage building located at Place d’Youville. Firefighters discovered seven bodies among the ruins several hours after the blaze was contained. The victims were identified as:
- Nathan Sears
- Camille Maheux
- Charlie Lacroix
- Walid Belkahla
- Dania Zafar
- Saniya Khan
- An Wu
In addition to the fatalities, nine other occupants were injured. Many of the units in the building were rented out through platforms like Airbnb. Following the fire, concerns over safety standards were highlighted, including significant issues such as the absence of windows in some units.
Ongoing Investigations
Initially classified as a homicide investigation, authorities believe a dispute involving a pimp and a client triggered the fire. Although no suspects were apprehended at that time, the case has drawn significant media attention.
Subsequent Legal Issues
On October 4, 2024, another fatal fire occurred in a building owned by Benamor, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her seven-year-old daughter. Two suspects aged 18 and 20 were arrested and charged in this incident. Allegations of extortion linked to criminal groups have surfaced in connection to this tragedy.
Although Benamor is not facing charges related to the second fire, he is involved in civil lawsuits filed by the victims’ families, as well as a class action lawsuit. His real estate portfolio, valued at over $20 million, has come under scrutiny regarding safety practices.
Concerns Over Property Safety
Benamor’s safety measures have been deeply questioned, especially in light of the two deadly fires. Over the past 15 years, he has received multiple violation notices concerning his properties. Additionally, a public coroner’s investigation has been initiated.
Recent Incidents
After the deadly fires, Benamor became the target of criminal acts. His car was set ablaze outside his Dorval residence, and a bullet-riddled office building was linked to him in Old Montreal.
