Top Tory MP Criticized for Condemning Muslims Praying in Trafalgar Square

Nick Timothy, a Conservative MP and shadow justice secretary, faced significant backlash for criticizing Muslims praying at an “Open Iftar” event in Trafalgar Square. The event, held over the weekend, drew attendees of various faiths and was supported by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who described it as the “biggest iftar in the western world.” Khan highlighted the diverse audience, which included Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, and atheists.
Controversial Remarks by Nick Timothy
Timothy expressed his concerns on social media, labeling the public display of prayer as an “act of domination.” He argued that mass rituals in public places contradicts the values of a pluralistic society. He stated, “The adhan… is a declaration of domination when called in a public place.” Despite acknowledging that not everyone at the event was extreme, he insisted that such public prayers should not occur again.
Responses from Parliamentarians
The criticism of Timothy’s remarks was swift. Independent MP Adnan Hussain pointed out that Trafalgar Square has historically hosted religious events for all faiths. He questioned whether Timothy would object to other faiths gathering in that space, suggesting his remarks were inflammatory and discriminatory.
- Adnan Hussain: “Public spaces… have long been places where people of all faiths come together.”
- Dominic Grieve: Former Tory MP emphasized the long tradition of religious events at Trafalgar Square.
- Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy: Accused Timothy of inciting division.
Support for Timothy
On the other hand, some Reform UK MPs defended Timothy’s comments. Reform’s deputy leader Richard Tice claimed that such public displays of prayer were inappropriate. He questioned the gender inclusivity observed at the event, noting that women prayed separately from men, a traditional practice in Islam.
Reform MP Sarah Pochin took her discontent further by visiting Trafalgar Square, condemning the prayer as a “domineering show of religious authority.”
The Message of Unity from Mayor Khan
During the event, Sadiq Khan emphasized the importance of community unity amid challenging circumstances. He encouraged attendees to be proud of their Muslim identity while fostering goodwill among diverse communities. The event was organized by the Ramadan Tent Project, a charity focused on community building and sharing the spirit of Ramadan.
The Open Iftar was a clear example of interfaith coexistence, challenging the divisive rhetoric that arose from Timothy’s comments.
