Greater Manchester Aims to Host Historic Ryder Cup, Promising £1.2bn Boost

Greater Manchester is making strides toward hosting the prestigious 2035 Ryder Cup, one of golf’s premier events. Central to this ambitious bid is the proposed £240 million Hulton Park resort in Bolton. This expansive 608-acre golf course site aims to attract global attention as it hosts the historic competition.
Economic Impact of a Greater Manchester Ryder Cup
If the bid is successful, hosting the Ryder Cup could generate an impressive £1.2 billion boost for the region’s economy. Civic leaders and landowners, including Peel, are committed to ensuring that Greater Manchester shines as a potential host.
The region’s plans include significant improvements to public transport to facilitate access to the Hulton Park site. With construction potentially starting in December, there is a strong sense of urgency within the local administration.
Infrastructure Developments
- £69.8 million dedicated to the Park Avenue link road to ease traffic congestion.
- Part of a wider 18 km M61-M6 NorthFold link road project.
- Infrastructure improvements will cater not just to the event but also benefit local communities.
The Ryder Cup, which debuted in 1927, is one of the largest sporting events worldwide. Europe currently holds the title after defeating the USA in 2021. The next editions are scheduled for Ireland in 2027, Spain in 2031, and California in 2033. The 2035 hosting rights are open, with England seen as a likely candidate.
Historical Significance and Local Support
Samuel Ryder, the tournament’s founder, has historical ties to Greater Manchester, having been born in Lancashire and later moving to Sale. Civic leaders assert that hosting the Ryder Cup in Greater Manchester would create a lasting legacy, with plans for new public amenities and heritage restoration at the Hulton Park estate.
The Peel Group, which acquired the land in 2010, has already secured planning permission for both the golf resort and over 1,000 new homes. Civic leaders support the development, viewing it as crucial for future economic growth.
The Role of Local Leadership
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham emphasized the potential for significant economic benefits from the event. He cited successful international events held in the city as proof of Manchester’s capability to host something of this magnitude. He stated, “We are committed to investing up to £70 million to enhance transport for the event and surrounding areas.”
Tommy Fleetwood, a notable golfer and supporter of the bid, expressed excitement about the prospect of the Ryder Cup being held in his home region. He believes that the North West has much to offer, from its people to its infrastructure.
Future Prospects
A successful bid for the Ryder Cup could also support Greater Manchester’s aspirations for hosting future Olympic events. The decision regarding the 2035 host will be made by Ryder Cup Europe, with proposals expected soon.
Competitors for the hosting rights include The Belfry, Luton Hoo, and The London Golf Club. The final decision will come by the end of summer, but local leaders are optimistic about their proposal.
“Peel Retail & Leisure is ready, willing, and able to deliver the Ryder Cup in 2035 for Greater Manchester,” a spokesperson from the Peel Group affirmed. The city’s efforts represent a unique opportunity to place Greater Manchester on the global sporting map.
