2,519 Remain Missing 15 Years After Devastating Quake and Tsunami

More than 2,500 individuals remain unaccounted for in Japan, 15 years after the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that affected the Tohoku region. The National Police Agency reported that as of now, a total of 2,519 people are still missing across six prefectures.
Missing Persons by Prefecture
- Miyagi Prefecture: 1,213 missing
- Iwate Prefecture: 1,106 missing
- Fukushima Prefecture: 196 missing
The tragic events of March 11, 2011, resulted in a total death toll of 15,901 across 12 prefectures. Among those reported missing was a six-year-old girl from Yamada in Iwate Prefecture, whose remains were identified in October of the previous year after being found in Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture.

In the aftermath of the disaster, approximately 720,000 police officers were deployed to conduct search and rescue operations in the affected regions. These ongoing efforts are vital, as authorities continue to seek closure for families of the missing.
Continuing Search Operations
This Wednesday, police are set to carry out an intensive operation to locate additional missing persons. They are also focusing on identifying the remains of 53 individuals currently unrecognized.
