2027 BMW i3 Prototype Test Drive Unveiled

Arjeplog, Sweden, is a prominent testing location for automotive prototypes, especially in cold-weather conditions. This town has been instrumental for numerous automakers, notably BMW, which first tested in the area during the 1970s. BMW established a testing center there in 2006, covering 69 acres near Lake Kakel.
2027 BMW i3 Prototype Test Drive Unveiled
The recently unveiled 2027 BMW i3 sports sedan is currently undergoing test drives at this facility. Built on a battery-electric platform, the i3 shares similarities with the iX3 SUV, including a dual-motor powertrain generating 463 horsepower. The i3 is equipped with 19-inch wheels fitted with Hankook iON i*cept winter tires, allowing it to perform optimally on snowy surfaces.
Testing Process and Performance

The i3 features a unique chassis optimized for engaging handling. Though BMW has not disclosed its exact weight, it likely weighs less than the iX3, estimated at 5,300 pounds. Drivers reported that, despite its heft, the i3 exhibited playful dynamics on ice.
Driving Experience
Engaging the Sport mode enhances the driving experience, providing increased steering effort and improved cornering response. However, the vehicle’s default settings focus on stability, slightly dampening its performance. The i3 utilizes a newly designed software system that synchronizes steering, brakes, and powertrain functions, yielding tenfold quicker responses.
Software and Handling
This integrated system helps maintain control, reducing the frequency of brake interventions. Although it offers smoother handling, some drivers felt restricted by the system, experiencing a constant tug-of-war with the vehicle’s controls during aggressive maneuvers. Feedback received during these test drives emphasized the necessity for ongoing software refinements.
Production for the BMW i3 is slated to begin in the latter half of 2026, paving the way for improvements leading toward the refined handling characteristics associated with the 3-series line.
