U.S. Gasoline Soars Amid Iran Conflict, Reaches Trump-Era Peak

The national average price of gasoline in the United States has reached its highest point during President Donald Trump’s administration. This spike is primarily attributed to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has effectively closed off the critical Strait of Hormuz, restricting the flow of millions of barrels of crude oil.
Gasoline Prices Surge Amidst Rising Oil Costs
According to GasBuddy, WTI Crude prices increased dramatically, moving from $67 per barrel on February 27 to over $84 per barrel as of early March. This surge represents a significant turning point, marking a potential 16% weekly increase—the most substantial one-week rally since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
Current Gasoline Price Statistics
- National average gasoline price: $3.262 per gallon
- Number of states with gas prices over $3: Increased from 8 to 33 in a matter of days
- Projected increase in states exceeding $3: Expected to reach 40
This gasoline price increase coincides with the transition to summer-grade gasoline, which is typically more expensive due to heightened demand during the summer driving season. Patrick de Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, highlighted that these changes are fueling the current price hike.
Diesel Prices Also on the Rise
Diesel prices are experiencing a sharper rise compared to gasoline. The national average for diesel has surged to $4.124 per gallon, setting a new record since December 2023. This escalation reflects acute disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East, which have intensified the scrutiny over oil supplies.
De Haan noted that several factors are putting pressure on the diesel market. These include:
- Drone attacks on Saudi refineries
- Qatar’s decision to halt natural gas production
- Increased demand for heating oil due to cold weather
- Depleted inventories within the United States
This combination of events has created a tighter market for diesel, leading to its prices outpacing gasoline in recent weeks. As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, further fluctuations in fuel prices can be anticipated, impacting consumers nationwide.
