Flames Trade Jacob Battaglia to Rangers for Brennan Othmann

The Calgary Flames have made a significant move at the trade deadline by acquiring Brennan Othmann from the New York Rangers. In exchange, they sent Jacob Battaglia to the Rangers, marking a noteworthy exchange between the two teams.
Key Details of the Trade
- Team Involved: Calgary Flames and New York Rangers
- Player Acquired: Brennan Othmann (23 years old)
- Player Traded: Jacob Battaglia (19 years old)
- Trade Date: On March 3, 2024
Brennan Othmann’s Background
Brennan Othmann was selected 16th overall by the Rangers in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, hailing from the OHL’s Flint Firebirds. He completed his junior tenure with the Peterborough Petes, clinching the OHL championship in 2023. Othmann has since joined the Rangers organization for the current season. During his professional career, he has participated in 42 NHL games, scoring a single goal and providing two assists, totaling three points. His time in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack has been more productive, where he recorded 41 goals and 44 assists across 120 games, amassing 85 points.
Jacob Battaglia’s Performance
Jacob Battaglia was Calgary’s second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He had an impressive draft year with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs, achieving 31 goals and 34 assists, leading to 65 points in 67 games. Battaglia continued to excel last season with 40 goals and 50 assists for 90 points over 68 games. However, his performance this season has declined, registering only 26 goals and 17 assists for 43 points in 58 games played between the Frontenacs and the Firebirds. This recent drop in production may have influenced the Flames’ decision to facilitate his trade.
Strategic Moves Ahead of the Trade Deadline
This trade signifies a rare hockey deal between Calgary and New York, particularly as both teams are looking to reshape their rosters. Recently, the Flames traded Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche for future assets, while the Rangers sent star winger Artemi Panarin to the Los Angeles Kings in February.
Upcoming Games
Following this trade, the New York Rangers are set to play a matinee game against the New Jersey Devils tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Calgary Flames will host the Carolina Hurricanes.
