Calgary Police Probe Overnight Shootings in Northeast Communities

Calgary police are investigating two overnight shootings that occurred in northeast neighborhoods. The first incident took place late Tuesday, near the Genesis Centre, located on Falconridge Boulevard. Police noted that an individual suffered injuries consistent with gunfire after an altercation in a parking lot.

Details of the Genesis Centre Shooting

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around Tuesday evening. Witnesses indicated that a vehicle approached a group of people in the parking lot. An argument ensued, leading to the driver exiting the car and firing multiple rounds into the group.

A male in his twenties was struck and subsequently taken to the hospital by friends. The victim remains in serious but stable condition at the Foothills Hospital. Police are still seeking the suspects involved in this incident.

Shooting on Martindale Boulevard

The second shooting occurred early Wednesday morning on Martindale Boulevard. Officers responded to reports of shots being fired into a residence just before 5:30 a.m.

  • Location: 200 block of Martindale Boulevard, N.E.
  • Time: Just before 5:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, police discovered a broken window, which appeared to have been struck by a bullet. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise that sounded like an exhaust, but they initially did not perceive it as gunfire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Investigation Status

Investigators recovered multiple shell casings from the scene. Bullet holes were clearly visible on the exterior of the home. Despite the severity of these incidents, police do not believe this shooting is connected to ongoing investigations of extortion cases within the South Asian community in Calgary.

Insp. Darren Smith expressed concern about the reckless use of firearms in residential areas. “These are concerning things,” he stated, emphasizing the potential for harm.

Community Impact

The recent shootings have left the northeast Calgary community on edge. Local residents are anxious about safety following these events. As investigations continue, police urge anyone with information to come forward.
