“Truly Honored: A Prestigious Acknowledgment”

Jonathan Castagna is embracing a new chapter in his hockey career after being traded to the Calgary Flames from Cornell University. The announcement came on a Wednesday evening, coinciding with excitement building around his performance with the Big Red.

Trade Details and Opportunity

The Flames acquired Castagna as part of a deal that sent MacKenzie Weegar to Utah. In a recent phone conversation, Castagna reflected on his feelings about the trade. “I’m really grateful to have this opportunity and it really is an honour,” he expressed. His enthusiasm underscored the significance of being recognized by a reputable organization like Calgary.

Performance Highlights

Castagna is currently enjoying a standout season at Cornell. The team’s recent success includes:

  • Ranked No. 9 in the USCHO national poll
  • Recording a third-place finish in the ECAC with a record of 20-8-1
  • Leading the team in scoring with 14 goals and 32 points

He also excelled in face-offs, winning 64.6% of nearly 600 attempts over 29 games. This impressive performance has energized his outlook as the team heads into the playoffs, with their first game scheduled for March 13.

Looking Ahead in the Playoffs

The Big Red are entering the postseason as back-to-back champions of the ECAC tournament. However, they face stiff competition from Quinnipiac, notably from leading scorer Ethan Wyttenbach. Castagna acknowledged Wyttenbach’s skills and emphasized the need for a solid defensive strategy against him. “He’s a natural goal scorer, so we need to keep our guard up,” Castagna stated.

Team Dynamics and Personal Insights

Castagna, originally from Etobicoke, Ontario, has received positive feedback about Calgary from teammates who are familiar with the city. He stated, “I’ve heard it’s really beautiful down there.” His connection with his teammates extends beyond the rink, as he enjoys hosting team dinners and sharing meals to strengthen camaraderie.

Leadership and Team Spirit

As a junior and a leader on the team, Castagna is committed to guiding Cornell through the playoffs. He attributes the team’s success to the collective hard work of both the coaching staff and his teammates. “It’s a huge testament to the new guys, too. They’ve all bought in tremendously,” he said, showcasing the unity and collective effort driving the team forward.

With a promising season ahead, Castagna’s transition to the Flames could mark the beginning of an exciting professional journey in hockey.
