Canadian Passport Fees to Increase Annually

Starting March 31, renewing a Canadian passport valid for ten years will cost $163.50, an increase from the previous fee of $160. This adjustment is now reflected on the official website of the Government of Canada.

Annual Increases in Canadian Passport Fees

The recent changes mark the first fee adjustment since 2013. According to the updated regulations published on January 26 in the Canada Gazette, passport and travel document fees will now be modified annually based on inflation rates.

Understanding the Fee Increase

  • Current passport renewal fee: $163.50
  • Previous passport renewal fee: $160
  • First increase in 10 years: Last change occurred in 2013
  • Average annual inflation rate (CPI) over the last decade: 2.7%

If this inflation trend continues, the passport renewal fee could rise to approximately $208.91 by 2036. Notably, fees for passport applications submitted outside Canada are higher.

The increase results from a need to address the operating costs of the passport service, which have not been adequately reflected in the previous fee structure. The past formula did not consider about 85% of operational costs, such as materials, delivery, wages, and technology expenses, all of which have risen with inflation.

Government Justification

The government argues that regular adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will produce fees that more accurately represent service delivery costs for Canadian passport services. Future examinations of the fee schedule may lead to even further adjustments to account for actual operating costs.

In the interim, annually adjusting the basic fees according to inflation is expected to prevent a further increase in operational deficits during the review period.
