Dutch MoD Chooses F21 MK2 Torpedoes for Future Submarines

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has chosen the French F21 MK2 heavyweight torpedo for its future Orka-class submarines. This decision marks a significant shift from the initial plan to use the American MK48 torpedoes currently in operation with the Royal Netherlands Navy’s Walrus-class submarines.
Details of the F21 MK2 Selection
The plan to integrate the F21 MK2 torpedo into the four new Orka-class submarines will occur during the vessels’ production phase. The Ministry of Defense opted for this advanced weapon as it believes the accelerated replacement of the MK48 is feasible.
Operational Requirements
- The new submarines will operate in high-threat environments.
- Anticipated threats include advanced (un)manned systems with anti-torpedo capabilities.
- The F21 MK2 is deemed essential for high-precision engagements against such threats.
Collaboration with France
The French Naval Group, which produces the F21 MK2, will also construct the new submarines. This partnership enhances cooperation between two key EU and NATO allies. Sharing knowledge on deployment tactics is expected to improve the overall effectiveness of the weapon system.
Future Deliveries
The delivery of the first Orka-class submarine is planned for 2033. This timeline marks a pivotal moment for the Royal Netherlands Navy as it transitions to modernized capabilities with the F21 MK2 torpedoes.
