MediaTek has announced a partnership with Starlink to enhance emergency satellite services for mobile users. This collaboration was revealed during the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Spain, on March 3, 2026.
Advancements in Satellite Emergency Services
The joint initiative aims to deliver crucial wireless alert messages globally. These alerts will be accessible through systems including the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) framework, and the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS). This initiative will help citizens receive important notifications during natural disasters and other critical situations.
Starlink Mobile Service Demonstration
At MWC 2026, MediaTek showcased the Starlink Mobile service on a device fueled by the new MediaTek M90 modem. This modem is the world’s first 5G component to integrate satellite technology. The service utilizes the S-Band for effective communication, ensuring users remain informed about emergencies no matter where they are.
Impact on Emergency Communication
- Currently, WEA services are live in the United States, Canada, and Japan.
- Over 4.4 million individuals have accessed Starlink Mobile during critical situations.
According to JC Hsu, MediaTek’s Corporate Senior Vice President, this partnership leverages their satellite technology capabilities alongside Starlink’s infrastructure. It addresses critical cellular coverage gaps that often arise during emergencies. The collaboration is expected to pave the way for standardized NR-NTN technology in commercial settings.
