Iran Conflict Sparks Concerns Over Rising Petrol and Diesel Prices

The escalating conflict in Iran has raised significant concerns regarding its impact on petrol and diesel prices. As crude oil is a fundamental component of these fuels, geopolitical tensions can lead to fluctuations in oil prices, ultimately affecting consumers at the pump.
Projected Fuel Cost Increases
According to the Automobile Association (AA), fuel prices in the UK may soon revert to levels seen at the start of 2023. Despite recent decreases in fuel costs, the ongoing situation in Iran could alter this trend.
Current Fuel Prices
- Average petrol price: 133.2 pence per litre
- Average diesel price: 142.7 pence per litre
Impact of Oil Price Fluctuations
Simon Williams from the RAC highlighted the potential effects of rising oil prices. He noted that for fuel prices to experience a substantial increase, oil prices would need to significantly rise and remain elevated over time.
Price Predictions Based on Oil Rates
- If oil reaches $80 per barrel, petrol prices may average 136p per litre.
- At $90 per barrel, diesel prices could exceed 140p per litre.
- Should oil hit $100, petrol prices could approach 150p per litre.
These projections underscore the uncertainty surrounding fuel costs in light of ongoing geopolitical conflicts. The AA indicates that the ultimate rise in fuel prices will depend on the severity and duration of the conflict in Iran.
