Councillor Nunziata Confirms Weston Lions Arena Preservation

Residents of Weston can breathe a sigh of relief as the iconic Weston Lions Arena will be preserved. Thanks to an agreement between the City of Toronto, the provincial government, and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), the arena will undergo revitalization.
Councillor Nunziata Details Arena’s Future
York South-Weston Councillor Francis Nunziata confirmed the exciting plans on Monday. The revamped arena will include a renewed ice pad and a comprehensive sports-based program. This new program will be located adjacent to the arena.
Current Discussions
Ongoing talks include Premier Doug Ford and MLSE CEO Keith Pelley. Together with Mayor Olivia Chow, they are working towards what Nunziata describes as a “made-in-Weston solution.” These discussions aim to create a facility that meets community needs over the years.
Community Involvement
The decision to preserve the arena comes after significant community effort. A petition advocating for the rink garnered over 16,000 signatures. Supporters emphasized the rink’s importance to the 1,200 individuals who rely on it weekly for ice activities.
A 77-Year Legacy
The Weston Lions Arena has been a part of the community for 77 years. Originally set for closure in March 2025, the arena was planned to be replaced by an MLSE launchpad facility. However, community objections and persistent advocacy have led to its preservation.
Next Steps for Revitalization
As work on the project progresses, officials will focus on solidifying the design for the revamped site. Nunziata stated, “These discussions will ensure that the city-owned facility is fully responsive to the community’s changing needs.”
The revitalization of the Weston Lions Arena symbolizes a commitment to preserving local history while supporting future community initiatives.
