David Byrne’s Tour Explores the Radical Question: How Do We Move Together?

David Byrne’s upcoming tour, titled “Who Is the Sky?”, aims to explore the transformative question: How do we move together? This tour follows the success of his previous production, “American Utopia,” which redefined the traditional concert format through innovative choreography and staging.
Choreographic Innovations with Steven Hoggett
For “Who Is the Sky?”, Byrne has collaborated with Steven Hoggett, a renowned movement director based in London. Hoggett has an impressive background, having worked with prestigious organizations such as the National Theatre of Scotland and the National Theatre in London. His accolades include an Olivier Award for his work on “Black Watch.”
Byrne’s invitation to Hoggett came just before Christmas, and the collaboration has proven to be a remarkable opportunity. Hoggett expressed the challenge of surpassing the artistic achievements of “American Utopia,” stating, “I still think American Utopia is one of the greatest pieces of choreography and staging I’ve ever seen.”
Capturing the Essence of Joy and Connection
At the core of the new tour is the thematic focus on unity and joy, particularly reflected in the song “Everybody Laughs” from Byrne’s upcoming 2025 album. Hoggett aims to illustrate a collective experience through dance, emphasizing that everyone has a role. “Everybody gets their responsibility. Everybody is somebody you will know by the end of the show,” Hoggett noted.
Creative Rehearsal Process
The rehearsal process involved six weeks of coordination in New York. To foster creativity, Hoggett spent the initial weeks working with dancers using different music, avoiding Byrne’s tracks to prevent predictability. He aimed to build a unique movement vocabulary, allowing them to explore different physical expressions.
Meanwhile, musicians learned the songs, incorporating their movements and developing a synchronized performance with the dancers. The meticulous preparation resulted in a highly dynamic stage presence featuring thirteen performers.
Choreography Amplifying Music’s Message
Byrne’s passion for dance has evolved over the years, and Hoggett highlighted how this creativity translates into the choreography. “David loves dancing, and his style has matured,” he explained, noting a shift in Byrne’s movement that reflects his artistic growth.
As the UK leg of the “Who Is the Sky?” tour approaches, anticipation builds for an exploration of collective movement and expression. The fusion of Byrne’s music with Hoggett’s innovative choreography promises a captivating experience that continues the legacy established with “American Utopia.”
